Our daily lives are full of sounds, noise, and clamor. We talk about work, answer phone calls, watch TV, listen to the radio on our way home or to the office, scroll through social media, hear the bustle of the streets, and even within our own walls there is always something to hear. We rarely encounter true silence—and yet, the soul needs it just as much as the body needs air.
When the external noise fades, we begin to hear what is really happening inside us. Sometimes, we may not even want to listen to our inner world. But silence helps us understand where our feelings come from, why things have unfolded as they have, and how we can find release. Silence is not emptiness; on the contrary, it is full of awareness. Only in silence do we hear our breathing, our thoughts, our desires, and our emotions—things that in the rush of life we often overlook. Silence allows us to start dreaming again.
Being consciously silent affects the brain in the same way that rest benefits the body. Our nervous system receives a signal that it is now safe to relax. Silence gives the soul a chance to breathe, to pause, and simply be—without the need to prove anything to ourselves or anyone else, without the need to achieve. Studies show that even a few minutes of complete silence can lower stress hormones and improve focus.
In silence, we become more sensitive. We notice how the wind moves the leaves, how moss crunches under our steps, how water glimmers. These moments help us perceive our place in the rhythm of nature and create a deeper connection with ourselves and the world around us.
When we allow ourselves moments of silence, we begin to see life with clearer eyes.
Experiencing silence doesn’t always require guidance or seclusion—even a few minutes a day can make a difference. Find a place where you can be completely alone, even for just two minutes. Close your eyes, turn off your phone, and listen to your breathing. Watch your thoughts come and go. Silence doesn’t need to be grand to be powerful.
And if you feel like experiencing silence more deeply, a day of silence at the Urumarja Sauna Retreat is a gift you can give yourself. It’s like a vacation for the soul—a place where you can truly hear what is happening within you.
We are located only 15 minutes by car from Pärnu, in the naturally beautiful and quiet village of Urumarja. The sauna camp emphasizes sustainability and self-sufficiency. We have no mains electricity and mains water. There is a compost-dry toilet on the territory, we get water from the Kurina river bordering the plot, and the little electricity we need is provided by a tiny solar panel. For heating, we prefer the alder grown in our forest, and from time to time we plant more young trees so that there will be somewhere to get heating in the future as well.
